Tracy Morse and Kingsley Lungu attended the WATERSPOUTT General Assembly from 29th – 31st May at the University of Stellenbosch. The WASHTED team updated the consortium on activities and progress in the development of Work Package 3, Solar-Ceramic system being developed and tested in Malawi. They provided an overview of the system development and testing with Buckinghamshire New University, University Rey Juan Carlos and CIEMAT, and the concurrent social science work being undertaken in partnership with Maynooth University to support user uptake.  The meeting, attended by 18 partners from across Africa and Europe, also had the chance to visit sites of the rainwater solar reactor being developed under Work Package 2 in Enkhanini.

A“viscous heater” developed at Missouri Kansas City (UMKC) and Oklahoma State (OSU) Universities, and tested at University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) in Durban, was donated to the Polytechnic. The heater kills faecal sludge pathogens mechanically.  Blessing Makununika and  Albert Muzhingi- researchers with the developing team - commissioned the technology in Blantyre for evaluation on local sludge by Polytechnic students.  UMKC/OSU will have alternative designs at other locations in the coming months and Polytechnic data will be included in technology assessment.  We thank our International partners for supporting WASHTED’s faecal sludge management work!

WASHTED played a leading role in the 1st National Sanitation and Hygiene Learning Forum organized by the National Sanitation and Hygiene Coordinating Unit in Lilongwe on May 3rd and 4th. Over 160 delegates from academia, NGOs, government, donors and civil society, gathered to discuss the challenges and barriers to sanitation coverage in Malawi. In an interesting two days, Dr Steven Taulo gave the keynote address, summarizing Malawi’s progress towards Open Defaecation Free status, while Mr Save Kumwenda (SHARE Research Fellow) shared appropriate technologies for flood prone areas and his recent research on Ecological Sanitation. WASHTED held an exhibition stand to share both published and on going research with delegates.

On May 4 and 5, WASHTED Co-hosted a regional workshop on Sanitation Planning and Faecal Sludge Management.  Participants from NGOs, academia, the private sector and consulting came together to look at appropriate planning tools for urban areas and innovative technologies for treating sludge with beneficial byproducts.    Participants as far away as Mzuzu developed sanitation systems for their respective contexts using the sanitation service chain approach; we are looking forward to seeing their innovative ideas turn into practice soon!

The RANAS: Risks, Attitudes, Norms, Abilities and Self-Regulation model was developed at Eawag by Dr. Hans-Joachim Mosler as a way to quantify factors that influence behaviour so that the behaviour can ultimately be changed with a targeted intervention. Jurgita Skliene is currently using the method in Kasungu to help design handwashing interventions;  WASHTED invited her to host a workshop for the WASH community in Blantyre. Participants looked at how the RANAS approach can be used for interventions as varied as toilet construction and improved nutrition and will be applying the technique in their own institutions in upcoming projects
